Natural gas distribution facilities step down and regulate high pressure gas from transmission pipelines prior to delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in cities. These facilities have vent (intentional), leak (accidental), and other CH4 emissions from the incomplete combustion of natural gas.Â
We have targeted several distribution facilities in Calgary, AB for source- and site-level measurements of CH4 emissions, in collaboration with the local natural gas distributor. This work is ongoing: the objective is to catalogue sources of emissions on site for mitigation, track variability in emissions over time at the site-level, and resolve discrepancies between estimates of emissions based on the measurements at different levels.
